AI is revolutionizing IT management, unlocking new levels of automation, efficiency, and intelligence. With the evolution from generative AI to agentic AI, AI has rapidly evolved, giving IT teams smarter ways to get more quality work done, faster. Unlike previous models, agentic AI doesn’t just process information; it learns, adapts, and takes independent actions based on real-time data.

With the power of agentic AI, IT teams will be able to introduce even more efficiency and productivity to their organizations. AI-powered automation and intelligence are also set to enhance security and scalability, making it easier for companies to grow and thrive. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the key applications of AI in IT management, including IT support, intelligent automation, proactive security, and resource tracking.

AI-powered IT support

One of the most common AI in ITSM (IT service management) use cases is AI-powered IT support. This means leveraging AI tools to help with ticket resolution and user support, which ultimately leads to faster response times and happier users and customers.

AI-driven IT service desks

Modern ITSM platforms offer AI service desk capabilities, which means that virtual AI assistants can provide real-time IT support and help with issue resolution. Ticketing and help desk services are also reaping the benefits of AI. With functions like ticket creation, categorization, and intelligent routing, these tools yield faster response times.

AI ticketing programs can resolve some issues independently, without human intervention, and can even automate common end-user solutions. But when necessary, they can also elevate the ticket to the appropriate technician – then, the AI companion remains available to help with script writing, command line generation, and more. A real-life example is Atera’s AI Copilot tool, which is transforming IT helpdesk work with 10X faster ticket resolution and 11-13 hours saved every week for technicians.

Predictive incident management

AI tools for IT offer incredible predictive analytics that can help with decision making as well as proactive incident management. These tools analyze historical data to anticipate system failures before they occur. For example, an agentic AI threat detection system can monitor traffic for patterns of suspicious activity, such as unusual network activity or unauthorized login attempts, and flag potential security breaches before they’ve affected the network.

With intelligent monitoring that detects anomalies and prevents disruptions, integrating AI into your IT management toolbox can help you keep your IT environment safe… but we’ll dive deeper into cybersecurity in a little bit.

Intelligent automation for IT operations

While IT automation follows predefined scripts and rules, agentic AI leverages reasoning capabilities to assess a situation, analyze context, and dynamically decide which actions to take. This presents incredible possibilities for enhanced intelligent IT automation…

Self-healing IT systems

Agentic AI tools can autonomously detect performance issues and apply fixes in real time, without the need for human intervention. If human intervention is needed, the AI platform will elevate the request to the appropriate technician. With intelligent automation, your organization will also be able to set up automated system optimizations to prevent downtime and enhance performance.

Automated patch and update management

Every IT pro knows the importance of patch management – and the tedious nature of manually installing patches. These tools will analyze past data to better identify and understand anomalies, making it easy for AI agents to determine when a breach is occurring – and even identify potential weaknesses and implement fixes before a breach happens.

AI tools can now automate threat isolation, mitigation, and prevention strategies. In other words, AI can help ensure that your entire cybersecurity process from start to finish is maximally strong against malevolent actors.

Adaptive endpoint protection

Because agentic AI remembers past actions, learns from data, and refines its approach over time, it is an excellent defense against new and emerging threats. This means that IT tools that are powered by agentic AI actually grow even more effective with continued use.

With adaptive endpoint protection, you can ensure higher-grade security through intelligent access control and anomaly detection for every single device in your network.

For example, an AI-driven endpoint security system can detect an unusual login attempt—such as an “employee”, which may be a bad actor using an employee’s credentials, logging in from a new location, or at an odd hour. Instead of blindly allowing access, the AI can enforce adaptive authentication, requiring additional verification or restricting access until the user’s identity is confirmed.

AI in IT asset and resource management

Much of IT asset and resource management is currently stuck in the past – and many organizations use time-consuming manual methods to track inventory and allocate resources. With AI’s predictive power and optimization abilities, you can embrace the AI digital transformation and bring your IT asset and resource management into the modern age.

Intelligent IT inventory tracking

Agentic AI tools can monitor IT assets, predict hardware and software needs, and optimize resource allocation. The best UPS systems are the key to an effective IT infrastructure. If the primary power source fails, UPS systems provide a backup power source to keep your IT equipment functional.

The purpose of this is to prevent downtime, which you should avoid at all costs. According to Pingdom, downtime can cost large businesses as much as $16,000 per minute, while small businesses can suffer a loss of $427 per minute.

In this article, our team has looked at the leading UPS system manufacturers (Vertiv, Eaton, APC, etc.) and listed the best UPS battery backup systems from them on the market. Before we review those, let’s look at key buying considerations for UPS systems.

💡 Why should you trust our reviews?

Most sites writing product reviews are driven by affiliate sales, which directly influence the equipment they recommend. Atera writes reviews independently and does not receive any compensation from companies. This ensures our recommendations are unbiased and solely based on the product’s performance, quality, and value.

Key considerations when selecting a UPS system

Before investing in a UPS system for your IT infrastructure, it’s important to understand:

  1. The different types of UPS systems
  2. Your UPS power requirements
  3. Battery backup runtime
  4. Outlet requirements
  5. UPS form factor

Below is a detailed look into each of these.

1. Different types of UPS systems

Before you go into more detail, first decide on the type of UPS system you need. Generally, there are three types of UPS systems:

  1. Standby: Standby UPS systems provide basic protection, are the cheapest to configure, and take the least space. They are best for simple home and office use where power outages are infrequent and brief.
  2. Line-interactive: Using a line-interactive UPS, the inverter is always on and part of the output. If the AC input fails, the inverter switches to battery power, which provides voltage regulation and filtering.
  3. Online double conversion:  Online double conversion UPS systems continuously convert incoming AC power to DC and then back to AC. The result is a clean, consistent power supply with zero transfer time during outages.

If you’re still not sure which one is the best, CyberPower has a great chart that helps to understand which UPS system solves your problems:

Screenshot via CyberPower: What UPS system is right for me?

Image via CyberPower

As the chart tells, double conversion UPS systems are the most advanced and offer the most protection for valuable and sensitive computers and electronics.

Line interactive UPS systems offer more cost-effective protection for most IT equipment.

2. UPS power requirements

The UPS system’s output capacity is typically measured in volt-amperes (VA) and defines how much power the unit can supply in battery mode to support connected IT equipment. A UPS must have at least as much power as the connected equipment, or it’ll overload and can’t support the equipment during an outage.

You can estimate the UPS’s power requirements by adding up the wattage of all the devices you intend to connect.

3. Battery backup runtime

Battery backup runtime refers to the time that the UPS system can provide support for connected IT equipment during an outage. Depending on how many devices are connected to the UPS system’s outlets, the runtime varies.

Most large-scale enterprise UPS systems can provide 2-15 minutes of runtime until power is restored or systems are safely shut down.

4. Outlet requirements

If you’re planning to buy a desktop or tower UPS, make sure it has enough outlets to support all your critical devices.

If you’re planning to buy a rack-mount UPS, you’ll most likely connect it to separate power distribution units (PDUs). In this case, you’ll need to make sure the UPS has enough outlets to plug the PDUs in.

5. UPS form factor

The types of UPS systems differ, and so do their form factor.

UPS form factors refer to their position and shape. There are generally three types of form factors available:

  1. Desktop UPS: Compact, designed for small office/home use
Screenshot of a Desktop UPS example (via Vertiv).

Desktop UPS example (via Vertiv)

  1. Tower UPS: A freestanding, vertical UPS that typically has outlets in the back.
Screenshot of a Tower UPS example (via Eaton).

About Atera
Small and medium IT operators are the heroes behind the scenes supporting companies around the world. They care a lot for their clients (external or internal) and often work virtually 24/7. However, small and medium IT service providers have always been underserved.
Atera was built for exactly that. With the vision to simplify and streamline the work of Managed Service Providers and IT professionals. To create something that saves them time, energy, and money. To free them from needing to constantly put out fires.
That vision created the remote-first IT management software – enabling IT professionals to shift from reactive task takers to proactive problem solvers.
Now operating from our beautiful offices on Rothchild in Tel Aviv, Atera is currently used by thousands and thousands of IT professionals all over the world (105+ countries).
As we rapidly grow, our goal remains the same: to transform the IT industry with revolutionary technology, while creating one of the happiest and healthiest work environments in the world.
