Scale Computing Continues to Deliver High-Performing, Scalable Edge Computing and IT Infrastructure to Manufacturing Industry

INDIANAPOLIS – April 13, 2021 – Scale Computing, a market leader in edge computing, virtualization, and hyperconverged solutions, today announced ongoing momentum with customers in the manufacturing industry, as HC3 Edge and IT infrastructure solutions continue to enable manufacturers of all sizes and geographic distributions to optimize operations with self-healing, automated infrastructure for all applications on the plant floor and beyond.

“The manufacturing industry has undergone transformational changes on so many fronts this past year – from supply chain challenges, to shifting product demands, to being an increasing target of cyber-attacks,” said Jeff Ready, CEO and co-founder of Scale Computing. “Plants of all sizes require easy to deploy and manage, localized compute infrastructure technology that is secure and resilient. Our HC3 Edge Computing solutions enable manufacturers to optimize their operations across the globe with self-healing, automated infrastructure that helps them grow.”

With the proper compute platform in place, manufacturing firms across all industries can deliver improved plant management, monitoring, security, productivity, and lower TCO, while keeping critical data and teams safe. Scale Computing HC3 software and appliances free IT teams from the complexity and costs of traditional IT, allowing them to focus more on furthering business needs.

Harrison Steel Castings is a world leader in the production of highly engineered carbon and low/medium alloy steel castings and operates electric arc furnaces and other precision machinery across a 650,000 square foot factory floor. Networking these machines was cost prohibitive, so staff previously resorting to using USB drives for data transfer. Implementing Scale Computing HC3 Edge solutions has helped the company address the outdated and unreliable systems previously in place that were preventing growth and slowing down business.

Shane Rogers, IT director at Harrison Steel Castings Company, noted, “Previously, our IT infrastructure was frequently running out of memory, failing to function properly and requiring frequent maintenance. With HC3, the system is so simple to operate, it runs on its own. It greatly improves reliability, reduces complexity, and gives us the ability to grow our IT infrastructure. We have a lot of big projects on the horizon, and we’re excited by how much closer they are to achieve now. We are set up for greater success knowing we can set up HC3, and it will run on its own without much oversight. This enables us to help our customers and focus on providing them with high-quality cast solutions.”

Ventura Foods, which delivers custom food solutions to foodservice, food manufacturing, and retail customers, faces the same IT challenges as many manufacturers, combined with the lower margins (and therefore budgets) that are the standard in the food industry. Overseeing 19 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, the COVID pandemic and related limits on travel and plant access forced their lean IT team to get even more creative than before.

“In this current climate, with uncertainty around when we will be allowed to go out to a location, we needed to make deployment ‘Ikea simple’,” said Wally Wheadon, Director of IT Infrastructure at Ventura Foods. “With Scale Computing we are able to build out a device, put it back in its box, send it out, and anyone with some basic skills at the facility can put it into a rack, put the color-coded connections together, and be up and running and able to recover from one site to another.”

Wheadon continued, “My advice is that if you’re trying to simplify your environment, and also position yourself for whatever that next level of compute infrastructure may look like while still being tethered to some of your past, you have to look at Scale Computing.”

Benchmark Electronics, Inc., a global provider of engineering, design, and manufacturing services, knew that their manufacturing sites were due a refresh, and ideally also wanted to reduce spend and simplify IT operations. They aimed to have a centralized and standard IT infrastructure that would be more strategic and cost effective across their global manufacturing facilities.

By combining servers, virtualization and management into a single product, Scale Computing’s HC3 greatly simplifies maintenance and management for Benchmark, providing significant savings in staff costs and time spent on the system. The scalability of the technology makes it easy for the IT team to add nodes in different locations around the company’s operations with minimum local configuration and customization required.

“We have standardized on Scale Computing at our remote sites because those clusters are easy to manage and deploy,” said Stacy Black, Director of Infrastructure & Operations at Benchmark Electronics, Inc. “We have reduced our spend and saved a great deal of time not having to train staff on legacy virtualization, as well as not having to spend time managing multiple vendors.”

Boughey Distribution Ltd was searching for the right solution to replace aging hardware and execute an infrastructure refresh. By selecting HC3, Boughey Distribution was able to decrease the time spent recovering from a hardware failure running a critical workload from 1-8 hours to less than 10 minutes, an 83-percent to 97-percent reduction in recovery time.

“Having a single point of contact is huge as most issues can and have been resolved with a 10 minute phone call. With my last providers I had to play phone tennis where one would pass me to the other. Cost is another bonus because the combined total was cheaper than the upgrade to another VMware and server provider,” said Paul Brough, Network Administrator, Boughey Distribution Ltd.

Challenger Motor Freight, Inc. was searching for the right solution to replace aging hardware and execute an infrastructure refresh to support growth and new business initiatives. By selecting HC3, Challenger was able to decrease the time spent recovering from a hardware failure running a critical workload from 1-8 hours to less than 10 minutes, an 83-percent to 97-percent reduction in recovery time.

“We are now able to just use the system. We can deploy VMs in seconds, which makes test/dev so much easier. High availability and replication come out of the box. We do not have to worry about patches for switch, san, server, and hypervisor. When needed, Scale Computing support is the best support I have received from any vendor ever in my 25 years of experience,” noted Scott Benninger, IT Manager, Challenger Motor Freight, Inc.

As the mass transit agency that provides bus transportation within State College, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding areas, as well as Pennsylvania State University, Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) requires highly-available IT infrastructure to deliver uninterrupted service to its customers. By implementing HC3, CATA was able to improve its disaster recovery, reduced its IT complexity with a single vendor to support its infrastructure, and reduced IT operating costs.

Donny Lynch, IT specialist at Centre Area Transportation Authority, states, “Scale Computing HC3 handles our server needs across the organization for our ERP systems, SQL servers, and remote access. Their technology has been critical in consolidating older legacy server hardware and server OS into one easy-to-manage-and-monitor system.”

Empire Airlines in Hayden, Idaho, flies 50 aircraft for FedEx, as well as passenger and cargo aircraft for Hawaiian Airlines. In addition to its air carriers, Empire Airlines has a maintenance repair overhaul facility in Idaho.

According to Melanie Ellingson, director of IT at Empire Airlines, the company was looking to upgrade its legacy IT infrastructure with a virtualization solution. Ease of use was a priority for Ellingson, who said she wanted a simple solution that did not require additional training or specialized personnel to maintain the IT infrastructure. Scale Computing Announces HC3 Video Surveillance and Security Solutions

INDIANAPOLIS – February 2, 2021 — Scale Computing, a market leader in edge computing, virtualization, and hyperconverged solutions, is introducing a video surveillance and security solution optimized to consolidate video storage, video management and analytics workloads. Scale Computing HC3 is an IT infrastructure platform with the performance, ease of use and resilience required to support surveillance, security and IoT requirements.

Building server and storage infrastructure to support critical video surveillance needs is easy with Scale Computing HC3 Software and Hyperconverged Infrastructure Appliances. HC3 automatically handles hardware failures, making the system easy to manage from day one and easy to “scale out” to expand resources when they are needed without adding additional “islands” to manage in the process. This is a great improvement from legacy video where systems adding additional legacy server based VMS / NVR monolithic systems was expensive and time consuming.

Recent protests in Minneapolis impacted three Jerry’s Foods locations and like many businesses in the region, Jerry’s Foods experienced property damage and stolen goods. As the situation unfolded, the IT team at Jerry’s Foods wanted access to each store’s video surveillance system, but needed to move quickly. Rapid, trouble-free implementation and deployment allowed the local IT team to move the small and lightweight Scale Computing HE150 servers from one location to another in less than an hour.

“Of our affected stores, one video surveillance system was running on Scale Computing and Digital Watchdog, the other was running on Digital Watchdog without Scale Computing,” Miller said. “We were impressed when we were able to quickly and easily move servers from one location to another, but our operations team was thrilled that we were up and running and watching video from a safe location within an hour. We’re constantly blown away by the simplicity and functionality of Scale Computing HC3, especially in a moment of uncertainty. It’s safe to say, I’m sleeping better at night.”

HC3 is delivered as a family of modular building block appliances with the intelligent infrastructure software included and pre-loaded. Additional HC3 nodes can be added to expand the overall HC3 cluster pool of storage and/or compute resources as needed without adding anything new to manage, so IT and security leaders can buy the resources as needed. HC3 nodes are available with a variety of resources and capabilities from high capacity magnetic storage, low latency NVMe and flash storage, a wide range of processor and RAM configurations as well as GPU.

One of the UK’s premier suppliers of plastic packaging, M&H deployed hyperconverged infrastructure and edge computing on its video surveillance system to keep premises secure and optimise scalability. “We are super satisfied with how our Blue Iris Video Management Software runs on Scale Computing’s HC3 solution. It is secure, efficient, and fast enough to handle all of our video surveillance and we have not had any issues with it. It has truly ticked all the boxes, because of this we now have the majority of our IT equipment running on Scale Computing,” said Rob Mellor, Director of IT at M&H Plastics.

VMS Software Solutions

  • VMS software for Windows or Linux can be installed inside a HC3 virtual machine.
  • Popular VMS software tested on HC3 includes MIlestone XProtect VMS, Genetec Security Center / Omnicast, Digital Watchdog DW Spectrum, Blue Iris, Pelco VideoXPert and many others.
  • Scale Computing HC3 is Milestone Verified and listed in the Milestone Marketplace

“HC3 software is intelligent infrastructure software that runs applications reliably. As a video surveillance and security solution we offer a flexible, reliable, and secure IT platform capable of being deployed quickly, managed both locally and remotely, and has self-healing technology that reduces the overall amount of time spent on IT support and maintenance,” said Jeff Ready, CEO and co-founder, Scale Computing.
