PAM Market Trends According to Gartner

Protecting privileged credentials is essential in the cybersecurity strategies of companies of all sizes and verticals. According to Verizon in its Data Breach Investigations Report 2021, 61% of data leaks involved privileged credentials. No wonder they are called “keys to the kingdom”, as they allow access to valuable information from the organization and which are often targeted by cybercriminals. Thus, protecting these “keys” from malicious attackers, granting secure access, and properly monitoring the actions performed in the environment through privileged access is essential not only in your cybersecurity strategies but also for business continuity.

It is no wonder that Gartner has chosen Privileged Access Management, or PAM, as the number-one security project for two years in a row. But what are the main trends and which capabilities offered by senhasegura meet the requirements established by the market according to Gartner?

First of all, we need to address what Gartner is and its importance to the technology market. Founded in 1979 in the city of Stamford, Connecticut, Gartner works through its network of 16,000 associates spread across 100 countries, assisting organizational leaders with their business insights. What makes Gartner different from other companies in this market is that, while most of them work only with management consulting for their clients, Gartner also works in the development of market research, in addition to events, when its analysts offer tech-related sessions for their clients and non-clients.

Gartner defines the PAM market as a fundamental security technology that aims to protect human and non-human accounts (also called machine accounts or service accounts), credentials, and operations that offer a high level of privilege. This type of privileged access differs from others in that it allows maintenance features, configuration changes, and adjustments to the security controls implemented in an organization’s infrastructure. Thus, it is necessary to properly manage all accesses performed in the environment, and only authorized users should be able to access data and systems. It is worth mentioning that in a scenario of increasing cyberattacks and data leaks, one needs to implement strict controls to manage privileged user access. It is estimated that, by 2022, 90% of organizations will recognize that mitigating PAM risk is fundamental risk control, a 70% increase over 2020.

Since 2020, Gartner finds that the PAM market continues to mature with accelerated adoption. It is estimated that the size of this market will reach $2.9 billion in 2024, an increase of more than 50% if compared to 2018, and that it will reach $2.2 billion in 2021, an increase of 16% over the previous year. Also, Gartner estimates that, by 2022, 70% of organizations will implement practices associated with PAM across all of their use cases, a 40% increase over 2020.

This expansion comes through the increased adoption of PAM by companies of all sizes. Once limited to medium and large companies, we have seen increasing PAM implementation in small organizations, primarily due to the shift in cyberattackers’ focus. As global companies already have a certain maturity in cybersecurity, hackers have preferred to take advantage by exploiting vulnerabilities in those most vulnerable companies, which in many cases do not even have a specific area for Information Security. By 2022, 60% of organizations will realize the benefits of PAM, in addition to the greater reliability and faster responses to changing IT environments, a 30% increase over today. And to respond to this scenario, also considering the migration to remote working models, PAM vendors started to offer solutions in SaaS environments. This implementation model allows lower licensing, deployment, and operation costs as well as lower Time to Value.

In this scenario, while small businesses are starting with basic PAM use cases such as credential discovery, remote session management, and elevation of privilege, larger companies have been exploring more advanced use cases. These cases include, for example, protecting credentials used by machines and software, the so-called secrets, and auditing privileged sessions. In addition, global and large organizations have also been demanding more elevation of privilege for a limited time through Just-in-Time (JIT) approaches, allowing for a smaller attack surface and reduction of cyber risks.

To help organizations of all sizes choose which PAM solution to deploy in their infrastructure, IT leaders should use Gartner’s Magic Quadrant reports as a guide. The Magic Quadrant for PAM allows you to assess different vendors and their market positioning, as well as their vision and how they perform according to Gartner’s market vision. This is done through the two axes of the quadrant: one axis representing the vendor’s market awareness, called Completeness of Vision, and the other that reflects the Ability to Execute its market view.

In the Magic Quadrant for PAM 2021 report, Gartner highlights the attention vendors have paid to remote privileged access and secret management in DevOps environments, as well as how PAM is currently a mature market. Even with a reduction to 10 vendors in the Magic Quadrant, once again, senhasegura was present as the only one from Brazil and Latin America. Positioned as a Challenger vendor, senhasegura stood out for its considerable evolution in the Ability to Execute axis.

As a strong point, Gartner’s report brings the rapid improvement in senhasegura’s capabilities and our ability to deliver new product features in the last year. According to Gartner, senhasegura has one of the most technically advanced PAM solutions. Also, the report highlights our ability to discover and add privileged accounts and to automate privileged tasks, or PTA. Gartner chose senhasegura as the best solution on the market in these aspects. Another highlight in the report was our pricing policy, which is considered highly competitive and below average for all scenarios assessed by Gartner.

Finally, the report brings the Customer’s Choice distinction as a strong point of senhasegura, which is obtained through the Peer Insights review platform. In their reviews, clients positively rated the ease of use of our PAM platform, highlighting the user-friendly interface and easy-to-implement features.

As a roadmap, Gartner highlights our plans to use Artificial Intelligence to analyze sensitive data in automation scripts and source code, in addition to the inclusion of Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management (CIEM) capability.

We at senhasegura are proud of the work we have done and the recognition of all this effort not only by Gartner, through the Magic Quadrant report, but also by our clients through the Peer Insights platform. These results indicate that we are on the right path towards the next magic quadrant: the leaders.

Food Company Replaces Cisco ISE with Portnox NAC

New Jersey-based Schuman Cheese has a long, storied history of delivering world-class cheese products to the U.S. market. Operating across several facilities in New Jersey, Illinois, Wisconsin and California, the company maintains a workforce of more than 400, with revenues topping $500 million annually.

A Deep Dive with Portnox CORE

About four years ago, Schuman Cheese went out in search of a network access control (NAC) solution to help the company manage network access across its many wired ports. Lead by IT Infrastructure Administrator, Andrew Sayegh, Schuman Cheese came across Portnox CORE while conducting research online, and determined the platform was worth pursuing. “We initially had a demo, then did a proof of concept, which was very easy to get up and running,” Sayegh went on to say. “We found that the visibility that Portnox CORE gave us for each port in use across the company was unparalleled. We really loved the platform off the bat.”

We found that the visibility that Portnox CORE gave us for each port in use across the company was unparalleled. We really loved the platform off the bat. – Andrew Sayegh, IT Infrastructure Administrator @ Schuman Cheese

Assessing NAC Alternatives like Cisco ISE

Simultaneously, Sayegh and his team were investigating Cisco’s Identity Services Engine (ISE), a legacy onpremise NAC solution. “I had previous experience with ISE, but I still needed another engineer to help me configure and implement it. Had I done it alone, it would’ve taken me a full week or more to complete,” said Sayegh.

After some time using with ISE and comparing it to Portnox CORE, Sayegh and his team felt the choice was obvious. “If ISE ever went down, we wouldn’t know how to fix it on fly. We’d have to find a temporary solution to allow people to reconnect to WiFi and wired ports. It was just always a struggle, especially with over 200 people connecting to our wireless network everyday.”

Closing the WiFi Security Gap Where ISE Fell Short

More recently, years after selecting to deploy Portnox CORE across the company’s wired network, Sayegh and the Schuman Cheese IT security team set their sites on trying to rectify lingering access control issues related to ISE across its wireless network.

“We conducted a test of Portnox CLEAR – your cloud NAC service – for access control across our WiFi environment. It took literally ten minutes to set up with the help of Portnox’s support engineer,” Sayegh continued. “It was just so easy to use out of the gate.”

The Pandemic & Cloud Adoption

“Since we’re a food manufacturer, we still needed to have people in our facilities and warehouses on site during the pandemic. These folks would need to be able to connect to WiFi primarily,” said Sayegh. “The implementation of Portnox CLEAR for WiFi gave us much needed access control that was flexible and easy to enforce during this period of uncertainty.”

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Sayegh and his team continued a campaign of cloud adoption when it came to new security tools – of which Portnox CLEAR fit in well. “We are making a real push to adopt cloud-based tools – that was a major factor in us bringing in CLEAR to support our access control policies across WiFi alongside CORE for wired,” Sayegh stated.

The hybrid use of CORE (on-premise) with CLEAR (cloud-delivered) for network access control has been exceptionally effective for Schuman Cheese, especially now as employees return to the office post-pandemic and increased wired network usage surges alongside continued WiFi reliance. Sayegh concluded: “It’s been very easy to work across both NAC solutions to enforce our network access control policies and keep the network secure.

Why Hospital Cyber Protection Is a Hard Nut to Crack

There is a simple reason why hospitals are the frequent targets of cybercriminals. Hospital networks contain patients’ and research data that is highly valued on the black market. And their infrastructure specifics make protecting it difficult.

In 2020, all 16 Czech key hospitals covered that year by the Cybersecurity Act reported a cyber incident. But also smaller healthcare facilities were being attacked and protecting them was no less complicated.

There are a few complications that make hospital cybersecurity challenging: the complex architecture of hospital networks, the frequent obsolescence of operating systems and also the insufficient number of qualified security personnel.

In addition, legislative requirements place high demands on security, including:

  • GDPR
  • Your National eHealth Center’s methodological guidelines (if you have one)
  • International standards that summarize security recommendations for the use of healthcare systems and best practices (ENISA – Cyber security and resilience for Smart Hospitals, MDISS – Medical Device Innovation, Safety & Security Consortium)

Last, but not least, every organization usually has its own internal security regulations. These are based on risk analyses or the internal recommendations and requirements of the hospital’s governing board for the operation of IT in the hospital.

The Most Common Targets of Attackers

In the first stages, attackers aim usually at hospital employees’ login credentials, through which attackers try to gain access to VPNs, internal or health information systems. All these systems contain high-value data through which the attacker can hold the hospital to ransom.

Another source of income for attackers is research data that can be effectively monetized, but patient data is an especially big gain. The price for this information (data about a person and their health status) is from tens to hundreds of dollars per record on the black market. By contrast, mere contact details (for example, from a hacked e‑shop) are only worth units of dollars.

And, of course, there are attacks whose primary goal is to take a hospital out of operation. In the case of compromised information systems, hospitals are unable to retrieve medical records or determine the availability of drugs and supplies. In the worst case scenario, the attack affects the operational infrastructure.

In short: the hospital cannot provide the healthcare function essential for its patients.

The Specifics of Internal Hospital Networks

Hospital internal networks have a specific and rather complicated architecture. They are the combination of not only IT elements but also include the operational technology of specialized medical departments as well as devices such as air conditioning, heating or blind controls.

There are many different types of IT networks in hospitals, for example:

  • Medical networks, in which doctors and nurses access medical records, inventories and other medical information
  • Patient networks, which are used by patients and visitors to the hospital
  • Private physician networks, which lease connectivity from the hospital and also have access to the internal network of information systems

All of this is often complicated by the frequent use of outdated systems and insufficient staff capacity to ensure the organization’s cybersecurity.

We should view these characteristics as specifics that cannot be immediately addressed but need to be kept in mind when securing health facilities. For example, some modalities (diagnostic equipment such as X‑ray machines, ultrasound, etc.) were purchased by hospitals 10 to 15 years ago and their level of security corresponds to their age. Often, the manufacturer does not even provide necessary updates, so there are devices with an un-updated operating system in the network. We have seen devices running on Windows XP. Even DOS and old versions of Linux are not rare as without these operating systems, it is not possible to use these devices.

Our experience, coming from dozens of hospitals in the European Union and Asia, has shown us that there are many hospitals with a high level of cyber protection. Unfortunately, there are also those with a large number of security shortcomings that need to be solved. Fortunately, GREYCORTEX Mendel can help them all.
