ESET Threat Intelligence data feeds join the hunt with Microsoft Sentinel integration

ESET Threat Intelligence data feeds set to increase visibility for users operating Microsoft Sentinel SIEM/SOAR platform.

BRATISLAVA — December 8, 2023 —ESET, a global leader in cybersecurity, today announced that its long-standing collaboration with Microsoft now includes the integration of ESET’s six threat intelligence data feeds with Microsoft Sentinel, a scalable, cloud-native solution providing security information and event management (SIEM) and security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) capabilities. ESET’s integration utilizes Microsoft Sentinel’s built-in TAXII client, helping security operations center (SOC) analysts in any organization hunt and investigate customers’ threat environments. This marks a new effort to extend the benefit of ESET’s unique data to organizations seeking to improve existing comprehensive threat intelligence solutions and rapid response capabilities.

The ESET data in question is built on the back of its renowned Malware and Threat Research pedigree, which benefits from unique telemetry fed from its substantial installed user base, among them regions underserved by most competitors. This unique value-add is best demonstrated by the many notable research pieces and exclusive detections, including GreyEnergy, BlackEnergy, Industroyer, NotPetya and many of the wiper malware discovered at the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

ESET’s data and its research cadre also regularly feature in large botnet takedowns and disruptions. These discoveries were pursued by more than 160 researchers and software engineers working in Core Research and Threat Detection at ESET.

The threat data feeds featured in this integration comprise only relevant, curated data that has already received in-house data evaluation, curation, sorting, scoring and processing. The data feeds include APT feed, malicious files feed, botnet feed, domain feed, URL feed and IP feed. The quality of the data is also reflected in the strong standing of #ESETResearch in the cybersecurity community and the contributions of its experts in partnership with MITRE ATT&CK, CISA, EUROPOL, FBI and a number of government entities.

With global concerns intensely focused on threats vectoring from Russia’s war in Ukraine and other hotspots going global, ESET prioritized rapid support for enterprises via its threat data in an agnostic approach to users’ chosen threat intelligence (TI) platforms. This acknowledges the diversity of software and technology stack choices. The integration also signals ESET’s path toward supporting seamless interaction between our data and internal tools and third-party SIEM and SOAR tools — starting with Microsoft Sentinel. This approach supports simplified workflows and reductions in manual effort and enhances efficiency. The collaboration between the two companies also demonstrates a strong market position, with two industry leaders combining their strengths.

“Integrating with Microsoft Sentinel allows us to demonstrate focus on strengthening security now. With our security-first, customer-centric mindset front and center, the integration will allow ESET and Microsoft’s joint customers to immediately benefit from a more holistic view of their security posture by combining ESET’s real-time threat data with customers’ wider security operations,” said Trent Matchett, ESET Director of Global Strategic Accounts.

“This announcement is also a proof point for ESET’s journey towards utilization of industry standard APIs (TAXII 2.1 and STIX 2.1) to deliver Threat Intelligence products. With the Microsoft Sentinel integration, ESET further demonstrates the unique value-add we’ve brought to the cybersecurity community for more than 30 years. So, for SOC teams, CERTs, MSSPs or TIPs that come across this integration, they should know that ESET data is highly actionable, and with ESET’s storied low false positive rates, can have immediate impact when countering threats that ESET has unique detections for,” Matchett continued.

Microsoft Sentinel users can now benefit from unique, diverse, actionable feeds from ESET. They can enrich their TI in a very useful and valuable way, and significantly improve their security posture and prevent ransomware attacks, malware campaigns, etc. These benefits are built upon the strong foundations of ESET threat intelligence (data feed) and its endpoint protection products (ESET PROTECT), which collectively include:

  • Enhanced analysis
  • Cloud native deployment
  • Intelligence-driven data (highly curated)
  • Dedicated team of threat researchers tracking all major APT groups
  • Unique data sources
  • Deeper visibility
  • Protection from botnets, precursors to ransomware attack

ESET Threat Intelligence unveiling Portal 2.0

Navigating the intricacies of today’s world is a complex task that requires accurate and timely knowledge as well as a contextual understanding of the geopolitical landscape. This becomes particularly sensitive when the digital security of critical infrastructure is considered, specifically for enterprises operating in the sectors of energy, finance, utilities, or petrochemical industries — or even for governmental institutions themselves.

Every day, ESET detects over 300,000 potential threats, providing our customers with unique insights from our own pool of more than 110 million sensors around the world, delivering a global understanding that is the foundation for any organization to anticipate, counter, and contextualize potential threats. Alongside our extensive visibility, ESET has built relevant industry partnerships and honeypots that source data where we don’t have direct telemetry.

The research focus ESET has pursued remains at the heart of the company, which has decades of experience in mapping and tracking major APT groups. ESET has been committed to proactively sharing targeted intelligence with the security community, being one of the most referenced and active contributors to the MITRE ATT&CK knowledge base, serving as a member of the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC) established by CISA, and regularly contributing to the work of law enforcement bodies such as the FBI and national CERTS.

A more intuitive interface for a better user experience

To provide even more comprehensive access to all the knowledge provided by ESET Threat Intelligence, ESET is launching a new portal that allows for a fully automated experience of the platform. From the start, customers can access the terms of agreement, including the NDA, managing licenses, or user activity. The portal also presents an intuitive view of ESET APT and Threat Reports, the latest research blogs and podcasts, and relevant infographics. If subscribed, users can view private reports compiled by ESET Research upon request. Users can also define the periodicity of notifications of new reports, selecting the ones they want to be notified of.

ESET is also bundling its six Threat Intelligence data feeds, allowing customers to choose those that best fit their needs under one unique license. Once the agreement is active, the data feeds are configured automatically by simply enabling them right from the portal.

The new portal also provides ESET Connect-ready APIs, and all functionalities can be easily discovered with a new Online Help section detailing each of the APIs and how to integrate them.

SOC analysts using ETI will also take advantage of ESET MISP as the main integration platform for APT Reports, enabling them to go through the listing of events, run retrospective intelligence analyses and queries, filter results based on labels, and, ultimately, search sightings and find correlation using correlation graphics.

ESET proprietary intelligence data feeds: Real-time global knowledge

Originating from our 13 research centers dispersed globally, ESET Threat Intelligence comprises the knowledge and expertise of ESET researchers into six different and highly curated feeds with unique telemetry that can be accessed based on an organization’s specific needs and size.

Simply put, the feeds are lists of Indicators of Compromise (IoC) and metadata, covering various aspects of cybersecurity, including tracking malicious files, botnets, and APTs; identifying potentially harmful domains or URLs and IPs considered malicious; and tracking the associated data.

To ensure compatibility and easy integration, the feeds are provided in widely used formats, such as JSON and STIX 2.1. Recently, ESET also announced the integration of its proprietary data feeds with the widely used SIEM and SOAR platform MS Sentinel, taking advantage of the built-in TAXII client of Microsoft Sentinel. Other already existing integrations are IBM QRadar, OpenCTI, Anomali, and ThreatQuotient.

Building a long-term strategy

Cyber threats evolve rapidly to stay ahead of emerging technology. ETI sits on top of all the work done at ESET, bringing together ESET’s unique visibility and research not only to provide deep technical analysis but also to provide a wider knowledge through the private APT reports that offer extensive tactical and strategic context to some of the most common questions: Why is this happening and who is behind it?

Moreover, ETI customers also have access to ESET researchers who will be ready to answer any questions arising from these reports, including technical follow-ups for a deeper understanding of the threat landscape.

The new portal will start rolling out in November.

ESET Research: Official Python repository served cyberespionage backdoor, gathered 10,000+ downloads

ESET Research discovered 116 malicious packages in PyPI, the official repository of software for the Python programming language, uploaded across 53 projects. Victims have downloaded these packages over 10,000 times.
The malware delivers a backdoor capable of executing remote commands, exfiltrating files, and taking screenshots. In some cases, the W4SP Stealer or a clipboard monitor that steals cryptocurrency, or both, is delivered instead.
The backdoor component is implemented for both Windows, in Python, and Linux, in Go.

BRATISLAVA, MONTREAL — December 12, 2023 — ESET Research has discovered a cluster of malicious Python projects being distributed via PyPI, the official Python (programming language) package repository. The threat targets both Windows and Linux systems and usually delivers a custom backdoor with cyberespionage capabilities. It allows remote command execution and file exfiltration, and sometimes includes the ability to take screenshots. In some cases, the final payload is a variant of the infamous W4SP Stealer, which steals personal data and credentials, or a simple clipboard monitor to steal cryptocurrency, or both. ESET discovered 116 files (source distributions and wheels) across 53 projects that contain malware. Over the past year, victims downloaded these files more than 10,000 times. From May 2023 onward, the download rate was around 80 per day.

PyPI is popular among Python programmers for sharing and downloading code. Since anyone can contribute to the repository, malware – sometimes posing as legitimate, popular code libraries – can appear. “Some malicious package names do look similar to other, legitimate packages, but we believe the main way they are installed by potential victims isn’t via typosquatting, but social engineering, where they are walked through running pip to install an ‘interesting’ package for whatever reason,” says ESET researcher Marc-Étienne Léveillé, who discovered and analyzed the malicious packages.

Most of the packages had already been taken down by PyPI at the time of the publication of this research. ESET has communicated with PyPI to take action concerning those remaining; presently, all of the known malicious packages are offline.

ESET has observed the operators behind this campaign using three techniques to bundle malicious code into the Python packages. The first technique is to place a “test” module with lightly obfuscated code inside the package. The second technique is to embed PowerShell code in the setup.py file, which is typically run automatically by package managers such as pip to help install Python projects. In the third technique, the operators make no effort to include legitimate code in the package, so that only the malicious code is present, in a lightly obfuscated form.

Typically, the final payload is a custom backdoor capable of remote command execution, file exfiltration, and sometimes the ability to take screenshots. On Windows, the backdoor is implemented in Python. On Linux, the backdoor is implemented in the Go programming language. In some cases, a variant of the infamous W4SP Stealer is used instead of the backdoor, or a simple clipboard monitor is used to steal cryptocurrency, or both. The clipboard monitor targets Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero, and Litecoin cryptocurrencies.

“Python developers should vet the code they download before installing it on their systems. We expect that such abuse of PyPI will continue and advise caution in installing code from any public software repository,” concludes Léveillé.

ESET Research dives into the onboarding and scamming processes of Telekopye online fraudsters

ESET researchers have analyzed how aspiring new attackers join Telekopye groups, thanks to ads in underground forums, and present a detailed view of the whole scamming operation from the attackers’ perspective.
The research contains analyses of the scam scenarios and what each Neanderthal has to do in order to be successful. (ESET Research refers to the scammers using Telekopye as Neanderthals.)
Telekopye’s capabilities include creating phishing websites, sending phishing SMS and emails, and creating fake screenshots.
According to ESET telemetry, this tool is still in use and in active development. The toolkit is implemented as a Telegram bot.

BRATISLAVA, PRAGUE — November 23, 2023 — ESET researchers have recently discovered and analyzed Telekopye, a toolkit that helps less tech-savvy people pull off online scams more easily, with the first part of the research being published in August. In this second part, ESET Research focuses on scammers’ internal onboarding process, a detailed view of the whole scamming operation, and analysis of the scam scenarios.

The capabilities of Telekopye include creating phishing websites, sending phishing SMS texts and emails, and creating fake screenshots. According to ESET telemetry, this tool is still in use and in active development, and is implemented as a Telegram bot. Victims of this scam operation are called Mammoths by the scammers. For the sake of clarity, and following the same logic, ESET refers in its findings to the scammers using Telekopye as Neanderthals.

Telekopye groups recruit new Neanderthals via advertisements across many different channels, including underground forums. These advertisements clearly state the purpose: to scam online marketplace users. Aspiring Neanderthals are required to fill out an application, answering basic questions like what experience they have in this line of “work.” If approved by existing group members with sufficiently high rank, the new Neanderthals can start using Telekopye to its full potential.

There are three main scam scenarios: seller, buyer, and refund. In the seller scam, attackers pose as sellers and try to lure unsuspecting victims into buying some nonexistent item. When the victim shows interest in the item, the “seller“ persuades him them to pay online rather than in person and provides a link to a phishing website posing as a legitimate payment site. Unlike the legitimate web page, though, this page asks for an online banking login, credit card details (sometimes including balance), or other sensitive information. The phishing website automatically steals it.

In the buyer scam, attackers pose as buyers, researching victims to target. They show interest in an item and claim they’ve already paid via the provided platform. Then they send the victim an email or SMS message (created via Telekopye) with a link to a carefully crafted phishing website, claiming that the victim needs to click this link in order to receive their money from the platform. The rest of the scenario is very similar to the “seller“ scam. In the refund scenario, attackers create a situation where the victim is expecting a refund and subsequently send them a phishing email with a link to the phishing website, once again serving the same purpose.

“In almost every group of Neanderthals, we can find references to manuals with online market research from which Neanderthals draw their strategies and conclusions,” says ESET researcher Radek Jizba, who investigated Telekopye. “For example, during the buyer scam scenario, Neanderthals choose their targets based on the type of items they are selling. For instance, some groups avoid electronics completely. The price of the item is also important. Manuals recommend that Neanderthals, in the buyer scam scenario, pick items with a price between €9.50 to €290,” he adds. Additionally, attackers using Telekopye utilize web scrapers to quickly go through many online marketplace listings and pick a “perfect victim” who will most likely fall for the scam.

Telekopye attackers believe that their groups are full of “rats” (for example, law enforcement or researchers). Thus, they religiously stick to the rules; mainly, no probing for information that could identify other members of the group. Breaking such rules may very well result in being banned. The golden rule is “Work more, talk less.”

Even though the main targets of scammers are online markets popular in Russia, such as OLX and YULA, ESET has also observed targets that are not native to Russia, such as BlaBlaCar and eBay, and even others that have nothing in common with Russia, like Jófogás and Sbazar.

For more information about how Telekopye attackers operate, check out the blogpost “Telekopye: Chamber of Neanderthal’s Secrets.” Make sure to follow ESET Research on Twitter (now known as X) for the latest news from ESET Research.

ESET extends its portfolio with VPN and Identity Protection* in a brand-new, all-in-one offering

In the new offering ESET introduces all-in-one subscription-based protection for individuals and their households.

As digitalization penetrates even deeper into lives across the globe, so does the everyday reality of cyber threats. Email accounts, data on laptops, mobile apps, and even your personal identity have become targets for bad actors. While this problematic situation needs a complex solution, it must be a solution that remains simple enough for everyone, not just those with educations in IT, to manage on their own.

For that reason, ESET has decided to introduce security subscriptions covering the complex needs of individuals and their households.

Protecting digital lives from one platform

The importance of digital life protection can be illustrated by data shared in the latest 2022 report conducted by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

Between 2018 and 2022, the total number of cyber-crime complaints received from individuals and companies around the world rose from almost 352,000 to slightly fewer than 801,000. Total reported financial losses increased from $2.7 billion to $10.3 billion.

Attacks such as fake tech support, personal data breaches, and phishing made it to the top five reported crime types for 2018 to 2022 globally.

The brand-new product, ESET HOME Security, aims to protect from almost all of these cyber threats targeting households, small companies, and self-employed persons.

Moreover, managing digital life protection has never been easier, with the improved ESET HOME platform and subscription-based cybersecurity.

What are ESET HOME and ESET HOME Security?

ESET HOME is the complete security management platform–a web portal and mobile app for Android and iOS. It serves as a notification hub presenting connected devices as an ecosystem, with their security as a household-level issue.

It offers users a convenient single place for managing their ESET products, devices, licenses, and services while making it all accessible anywhere they go, whenever they need it. Users can activate and renew their subscriptions, add new devices, and download or upgrade security solutions on one platform.

For example, now, when users want to protect their Android devices, they can use the ESET HOME portal on their laptop to manage the installation of the ESET Mobile Security (EMS) app on an Android device, where it is automatically activated and connected to the users’ ESET HOME accounts. Then, if the users want to connect to their ESET HOME accounts from their Android devices, all they have to do is open the ESET Mobile Security app in their devices and connect to ESET HOME in the side-bar menu section. Users no longer have to copy the license key into the app.

The ESET HOME platform also enables users to share subscriptions with friends and family, and to monitor their security status.

ESET HOME Security is a brand new offering, with three subscription tiers for this new ecosystem: ESET HOME Security Essential, ESET HOME Security Premium, and ESET HOME Security Ultimate.

This customer-focused, subscription-based offering also introduces new features to ESET HOME, such as Identity Protection*, VPN, and a newly developed extension of the Browser Privacy & Security feature.

How can you benefit from VPN, Identity Protection* and Browser Security?

Due to both our evolving digital lives and today’s cyber threats, the demand for personal online privacy and data protection is rising. According to the 2022 Consumer Digital Life Protection Survey conducted in the UK, US, and France, more than 25% of participants want to adopt VPN and Identity Protection technology in 2023.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a functionality that establishes a private network connection making internet users anonymous. After connecting to the VPN application, the user’s device gets a new IP address, and online traffic is secured and encrypted.

This way, ESET VPN prevents cyber criminals from stealing user data while using public Wi-Fi and makes it more difficult for third parties to track user activity online, while ESET does not keep logs.
