To complement the long list of already existing layers of protection, including Antivirus & Antispyware, Firewall, Ransomware Shield, Anti-Phishing, Safe Banking, Safe Browsing, Password Manager, VPN,  and Anti-Theft — to name just a few — new features and upgrades have been added:

New Dark Web Monitoring — ESET Identity Protection* scours websites on the dark web, black market chat rooms, blogs, and other data sources to detect the illegal trading and selling of users’ personal information. ESET technology sends prompt alerts so users can take immediate action.

New ESET Folder Guard — This technology helps protect Windows users’ valuable data from malicious apps and threats, such as ransomware, worms, and wipers (malware that can damage users’ data). Users can create a list of protected folders — files in these folders can’t be modified or deleted by untrusted applications.

New Multithread Scanning — Improves scanning performance for multi-core processor devices using Windows by distributing scanning requests among available CPU cores. There can be as many scanning threads as the machine has processor cores.

New Link Scanner — This feature improves ESET Mobile SecurityAnti-Phishing that, in general, blocks potential phishing attacks coming from websites or domains listed in the ESET malware database. The Link Scanner is an additional layer of protection for Android smartphone users that allows ESET Mobile Security to check every link a user tries to open, not only those coming from supported websites and social network apps. For instance, if a user receives a phishing link in a game app and opens it, the link is first redirected to the ESET Mobile Security app, where it is checked, before being redirected to the browser. If the user is using an unsupported browser, the Link Scanner will block the malicious link in this case.

Improved Gamer Mode — This feature is for users who demand uninterrupted usage of their software without pop-up windows and want to minimize CPU usage. The improved version allows users to create a list of apps automatically starting gamer mode. For cautious players, there is also a new option to display interactive alerts while gamer mode is running.

Improved Password Manager — ESET Password Manager now includes an option to remotely log out of Password Manager when it is logged in on other devices. Users can check their password against the password breach list and view a security report that informs users if they use any weak or duplicate passwords for their stored accounts. Password Manager has an integrated option to use third-party programs as an optional two-factor authentication (2FA).

Improved Cyber Security for Mac users —ESET HOME Security tiers for Mac users now have a new unified Firewall with both basic and advanced setup options in the main Graphical User Interface (GUI). This means the solution is tailored to the needs of users from basic to more advanced, without unnecessary settings.

This robust all-in-one security product is an ideal solution for all who have concerns beyond general cybersecurity, and it includes privacy protection, identity protection, performance optimization, device protection, and smart home protection. Because in a world of advanced cyberthreats, quality matters.

  • Customers can now purchase ESET V&PM as a separate add-on for ESET PROTECT Entry and ESET PROTECT Advanced subscriptions

BRATISLAVAOctober 10, 2024ESET, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, today announces its release of an update to its ESET Vulnerability and Patch Management module.

For organizations, it is crucial that they minimize their attack surface. With thousands of vulnerabilities being discovered every quarter, the threat landscape is in constant flux. A single vulnerability can bring a business, nay, a whole supply chain to a standstill. To prevent such an eventuality, vulnerability and patch management is an excellent tool, providing great cyber hygiene while helping build a proactive security posture, preventing incidents from taking place.

ESET understands all too well that threat actors continuously target an increasingly broad spectrum of devices, systems, and software. With our new update, ESET V&PM has expanded to support Linux1 (desktops and servers), as well as macOS2, covering broader parts of a business’ ecosystem.

To support such a comprehensive endeavor, the V&PM module is now also presented in a new dashboard, improved for greater visibility and transparency, enhancing its ease of use while giving an instant overview of vulnerability and patching status across a network.

At the same time, due to ESET V&PM’s deep embedding inside the ESET PROTECT Platform, it now also supports on-demand vulnerability scanning, enabling instant insight into the status of specific machines.

While as a default, vulnerability scanning is fully automated to save you time and close the attack gap against threat actors, for Windows and Linux servers, the product gives manual control to its administrators. This is especially useful in helping security admins have more oversight over their scanning and patching processes, so that they don’t interrupt business workflows.

“We believe that top-level security shouldn’t require needless complexity, as it only makes security workflows too time-consuming, which could be better spent on other important tasks. With this new update to our ESET V&PM module, we take all of this into consideration, focusing on what matters – speed, ease of use, compliance3, and proactive prevention. Threats don’t sleep and with the always-on function, neither does our solution, keeping a constant eye on your business’ security,” said Michal Jankech, Vice President, Enterprise & SMB/MSP at ESET.

ESET’s Vulnerability & Patch Management is available in the following solutions: ESET PROTECT Complete, ESET PROTECT Elite, ESET PROTECT MDR, and ESET PROTECT MDR Ultimate. With the latest update, customers can order ESET V&PM as an add-on to ESET PROTECT Entry and ESET PROTECT Advanced subscription as well, upping business security from the smallest player to the largest. As always, the current update will be rolled out automatically without any additional costs.

Optimized Malware Detection from ESET & Intel

ESET has been collaborating with Intel for several years to deliver endpoint security software that can take advantage of hardware-based security and performance features—a major advantage in the battle to detect advanced ransomware and other constantly evolving threats.

Why businesses need hardware layer security on their endpoints

Despite all efforts, ransomware attacks continue to escalate in frequency and severity, with cybercriminals’ extortion tactics becoming progressively more brutal. Ransomware and malware in general are also becoming more sophisticated and better able to avoid detection by conventional means.

For example, recent ransomware variants can rewrite themselves once they infiltrate a victim’s environment, thus dodging traditional signature-based detection tools. Another emerging ransomware capability is hiding inside virtual machines.

These advanced obfuscation techniques are creating gaps in cybersecurity coverage. This is where hardware-based malware detection comes into play—detecting both known and novel malware to keep companies safer. While malware software always leaves a “fingerprint” when it executes, hardware-based monitoring of CPU telemetry can flush out even the most sophisticated ransomware, providing elevated immunity to many detection bypasses.

Mutual customers have benefitted from ESET’s collaboration with Intel since March 2022, when ESET rolled out its ESET PROTECT multilayered cybersecurity suite integrated and automatically configured with Intel® Threat Detection Technology (Intel® TDT).  Today, approximately 90% of ESET end users are running on Intel-based systems. Residing  on the Intel CPU, the combined solutions use AI to analyze CPU telemetry to provide advanced detection against new and existing strains of malware—especially ransomware.

The latest from ESET and Intel: Leveraging hybrid processors to optimize performance

While the need for advanced, AI-driven threat detection grows by the day, cybersecurity and IT leaders look to balance new technology deployments against the performance and productivity challenges brought on by remote and hybrid work scenarios. Endpoint security tools must keep a low profile to avoid slowing down other tasks and/or draining users’ batteries.

This is why ESET and Intel have expanded their work together, now offering advanced endpoint solutions that take advantage of Intel’s latest hybrid processor architecture. The newer generations of Intel® Core™ and Intel® Core™ Ultra processors have two kinds of cores:

  1. Performance cores, which compute at the highest speeds
  2. Efficient cores, which compute relatively fast but with much lower energy consumption

How is hybrid chip architecture relevant to cybersecurity incident detection and response? If you are trying to detect the presence of malware, you probably want that operation to run as fast as possible. So, you would run it on performance cores. But some other cybersecurity processes, such as updates and background scans, can run on efficient cores to save device power and optimize the performance of priority tasks.

By taking advantage of Intel’s hybrid processor architecture to intelligently schedule background workloads on efficient cores when available, ESET endpoint protection solutions can better meet the demands of remote and hybrid work scenarios. Another key benefit discovered in initial testing: battery power savings on laptops running the hybrid aware software have been on the order of 5% to 8%.

According to Előd Kironský, Vice President of Endpoint Solutions and Security Technologies at ESET, “Our endpoint protection product is aware that it is running on a hybrid processor, and it is able to direct different workloads to use either efficient cores or performance cores. Assigning workloads to efficient cores has no negative impact on product performance. In a number of scenarios, performance increases were documented and processes completed faster.”

This new “hybrid aware” capability is slated to be released to ESET customers in early December.

Compound benefits for ESET customers running on Intel

Low impact to system performance is an area that ESET has always prioritized within its multilayered software architecture and is a key selling point for many of our clients. Leveraging technology that can help with prevention and protection while also preserving performance is a win-win choice.

Likewise, ESET has always advocated a multilayered approach to security. By adding the silicon layer to our security stack, ESET and Intel have reached a new milestone in combatting cyberthreats.

By taking advantage of newly expanded capabilities in the Intel relationship, our customers witness multiple benefits from the joint solution.

  • Intel TDT’s hardware-level malware detection coupled with its ongoing machine learning improvements are a powerful weapon in the fight against ransomware and other cyberattacks.
  • The added compute demands from this new hardware-level detection capability are largely being offloaded onto the GPU or efficiency cores, minimizing impacts on system performance and end user productivity.
  • Because the joint solution activates and operates automatically, it delivers an immediate boost to ransomware protection with no increase in IT complexity or administrative workload.

Customers looking to take advantage of next-gen cybersecurity won’t have to wait long for continued innovation from ESET and Intel. We are currently working together to develop new functionalities and tools that take advantage of the neural processing unit (NPU) in Intel Core Ultra processors and expand on ESET’s leadership in AI-native security for AI PCs.

It’s important that we continue to maximize innovation and address tomorrow’s unknown threats through our work with innovation partners, like Intel. It’s these types of collaborations that will empower a safer tomorrow for businesses of all sizes, and we are proud to include them in the ESET technology ecosystem.

ESET Research: Telekopye scammer network targets Booking.com and Airbnb

  • ESET Research released new findings on Telekopye, a scam toolkit designed to help cybercriminals defraud people on online marketplaces.
  • Telekopye groups have expanded their targeting to popular accommodation booking platforms, such as Booking.com and Airbnb.
  • The attackers are utilizing compromised accounts of legitimate hotels and accommodation renters.
  • These scams were especially prevalent in the summer holiday season in the targeted regions, surpassing Telekopye’s marketplace scams in ESET telemetry.
PRAGUE, BRATISLAVAOctober 10, 2024 — ESET researchers discovered that the organized scammer network Telekopye has expanded its operations to target users of popular accommodation booking platforms like Booking.com and Airbnb. They have also increased the sophistication of their victim selection and of targeting the two booking sites, where the phishing pages are even more believable than regular online marketplace ones. Telekopye is a toolkit that operates as a Telegram bot turning online marketplace scams into illicit organized business. It is used by dozens of scam groups with up to thousands of members to steal millions of euros from their victims. ESET Research presented the latest findings about Telekopye at the 2024 Virus Bulletin conference. In the Telekopye scammer network, the scammers refer to the targeted buyers and sellers as Mammoths. The scammers, called Neanderthals by ESET researchers, require little to no technical knowledge – Telekopye takes care of everything in a matter of seconds. According to ESET telemetry, the booking scams started gaining traction in 2024. The accommodation-themed scams saw a sharp uptick in July, surpassing Telekopye’s marketplace scams for the first time, with more than double the detections. In August and September, the two categories continued at similar levels. The growing popularity of online marketplaces has attracted fraudsters preying on unsuspecting buyers and sellers, looking to score credit card information rather than bargains. As this booking scam increase coincides with the summer holiday season in the targeted regions – prime time for taking advantage of people booking stays – it remains to be seen if this trend continues. Based on the 2024 data, these newer scams have amassed approximately half of the detection numbers of the marketplace variants. The newer scams focus mainly on two platforms – Booking.com and Airbnb – compared to the wide variety of online marketplaces targeted by Telekopye. In this new scam scenario, scammers send an email to a targeted user of one of these platforms, claiming an issue with their booking payment. The email contains a link to a well-crafted, legitimate-looking web page mimicking the abused platform. The page contains prefilled information about a booking, such as the check-in and check-out dates, price, and location – and the information provided on the fraudulent pages matches real bookings made by the targeted users. “The scammers achieve this by utilizing compromised accounts of legitimate hotels and accommodation renters on the platforms, which they most likely obtain through purchasing stolen credentials on cybercriminal forums. Using their access to these accounts, the scammers single out users who recently booked a stay and haven’t paid yet – or paid very recently – and target them,” explains ESET researcher Radek Jizba, who discovered and analyzed Telekopye. “This approach makes the scam much harder to spot, as the information provided is personally relevant to the victims and the websites look as expected. The only visible signs of something being amiss are the websites’ URLs, which do not match the impersonated, legitimate websites,” he adds. Besides diversifying their target portfolio, Neanderthals have also tried to improve their tools and operations to increase their gains. “Before filling out any forms related to your booking, always make sure you haven’t left the official website or app of the platform in question. Being directed to an external URL to proceed with your booking and payment is a strong indicator of a scam,” advises Jizba. In late 2023, after ESET Research had published its two-part series on Telekopye, Czech and Ukrainian police arrested tens of cybercriminals utilizing Telekopye, including the key players, in two joint operations. Both operations were aimed against a further unspecified number of Telekopye groups, which had accumulated at least €5 million since 2021, based on police estimates. ESET Research: GoldenJackal APT group, with air-gap-capable tools, targets systems in Europe to steal confidential data

  • GoldenJackal, an advanced persistent threat (APT) group, used a custom toolset to target air-gapped systems at a South Asian embassy in Belarus since at least August 2019.
  • In another attack, GoldenJackal deployed a highly modular toolset in Europe on various occasions between May 2022 and March 2024 against a government organization in a European Union country.
  • These toolsets provide GoldenJackal with a wide set of capabilities for compromising and persisting in targeted networks. Victimized systems are given different roles in the local network, from collecting interesting – likely confidential – information, to processing the information, distributing files, configurations, and commands to other systems, or exfiltrating files.
  • The ultimate goal of GoldenJackal is very likely to be stealing confidential information, especially from high-profile machines that are intentionally isolated from the internet.

MONTREAL, BRATISLAVAOctober 7, 2024 — ESET researchers have discovered a series of attacks that took place in Europe from May 2022 to March 2024, where the attackers used a toolset capable of targeting air-gapped systems, in a governmental organization of a European Union country. ESET attributes the campaign to GoldenJackal, a cyberespionage APT group that targets government and diplomatic entities. By analyzing the toolset deployed by the group, ESET identified an attack GoldenJackal carried out earlier, in 2019, against a South Asian embassy in Belarus that targeted the embassy’s air-gapped systems with custom tools. The ultimate goal of GoldenJackal is very likely to be stealing confidential and highly sensitive information, especially from high-profile machines that might not be connected to the internet. ESET Research presented their findings at the 2024  Virus Bulletin conference.

To minimize the risk of compromise, highly sensitive networks are often air-gapped – isolated from other networks. Usually, organizations will air gap their most valuable systems, such as voting systems and industrial control systems running power grids. These are often precisely the networks that are of interest to attackers. Compromising an air-gapped network is much more resource-intensive than breaching an internet-connected system, which means that frameworks designed to attack air-gapped networks have so far been exclusively developed by APT groups. The purpose of such attacks is always espionage.

“In May 2022, we discovered a toolset that we could not attribute to any APT group. But once the attackers used a tool similar to one of those already publicly documented, we were able to dig deeper and find a connection between the publicly documented toolset of GoldenJackal and this new one. Extrapolating from that, we managed to identify an earlier attack where the publicly documented toolset had been deployed, as well as an older toolset that also has capabilities to target air-gapped systems,” says ESET researcher Matías Porolli, who analyzed GoldenJackal’s toolset.

GoldenJackal has been targeting governmental entities in Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. ESET detected GoldenJackal tools at a South Asian embassy in Belarus in August and September 2019, and again in July 2021. More recently, according to ESET telemetry, another governmental organization in Europe was repeatedly targeted from May 2022 until March 2024.

With the level of sophistication required, it is quite unusual that in five years, GoldenJackal managed to deploy not one, but two separate toolsets designed to compromise air-gapped systems. This speaks to the resourcefulness of the group. The attacks against a South Asian embassy in Belarus made use of custom tools that we have only seen in that specific instance so far. The campaign used three main components: GoldenDealer to deliver executables to the air-gapped system via USB monitoring; GoldenHowl, a modular backdoor with various functionalities; and GoldenRobo, a file collector and exfiltrator.

“When a victim inserts a compromised USB drive in an air-gapped system and clicks on a component that has the icon of a folder but is actually a malicious executable, then GoldenDealer is installed and run, starting to collect information about the air-gapped system, and storing it on the USB drive. When the drive is again inserted into the internet-connected PC, GoldenDealer takes the information about the air-gapped PC from the USB drive and sends it to the C&C server. The server replies with one or more executables to be run on the air-gapped PC. Finally, when the drive is again inserted into the air-gapped PC, GoldenDealer takes the executables from the drive and runs them. No user interaction is needed because GoldenDealer is already running,” explains Porolli.

In its latest series of attacks against a government organization in the European Union, GoldenJackal moved on from the original toolset to a new, highly modular one. This modular approach applied not only to the malicious tools, but also to the roles of victimized hosts within the compromised system: they were used, among other things, to collect and process interesting, likely confidential information, to distribute files, configurations, and commands to other systems, and to exfiltrate files.
