Firefox is one of the most popular desktop browsers in the world. Praised for its privacy-focused features, it\u2019s the main alternative to Chromium-based browsers such as Google Chrome or Edge. The security assurance from the Firefox team allures many to the convenience of storing their login credentials using the browser\u2019s built-in function.<\/span><\/p><\/div>

In this article, you\u2019ll learn how to view, change, delete, import, and export saved passwords in Firefox. We\u2019ll also briefly discuss whether saving passwords in a browser is a secure option compared to password managers.<\/p>

How to view saved passwords on Firefox<\/h2>

Firefox offers two paths to find where your passwords are stored. The first is straightforward:<\/p>

  1. Open Firefox and click the hamburger menu at the top right corner.<\/p><\/li>

  2. Select \u201cPasswords.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

  3. You\u2019ll see the list of your saved credentials.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

    You can also find your passwords in the Firefox settings:<\/p>

    1. Click the hamburger menu at the top right corner.<\/p><\/li>

    2. Select \u201cSettings\u201d<\/b> and click on \u201cPrivacy <\/b>&<\/span><\/b> security.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

    3. Find the \u201cLogins and passwords\u201d<\/b> section and click \u201cSaved logins.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

    4. You will see the list of your saved credentials.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

      How to change saved passwords on Firefox<\/h2>

      1. In the \u201cPasswords\u201d<\/b> section, select one of your saved items.<\/p><\/li>

      2. Click the \u201cEdit\u201d<\/b> button.<\/p><\/li>

      3. Enter your new username and\/or password.<\/p><\/li>

      4. Click \u201cSave changes.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

        How to delete saved passwords on Firefox<\/h2>

        1. In the \u201cPasswords\u201d<\/b> section, select one of your saved items.<\/p><\/li>

        2. Click the \u201cRemove\u201d<\/b> button.<\/p><\/li>

        3. You will see a prompt screen. Select \u201cRemove\u201d<\/b> to proceed with the deletion. Keep in mind that once a password is deleted, it cannot be restored.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

          How to import passwords to Firefox<\/h2>

          1. Go to the \u201cPasswords\u201d<\/b> section as explained above.<\/p><\/li>

          2. Click the three dots at the top right corner next to your email address.<\/p><\/li>

          3. Select one of the options: \u201cImport from another browser\u201d<\/b> or \u201cImport from a file.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

            If you choose to import from another browser:<\/p>

            1. Select the available browser from the list and choose which data you want to import or select all.<\/p><\/li>

            2. Click \u201cImport\u201d<\/b> and wait for the process to finish. Once the data import is complete, click \u201cDone.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

              If you choose to import from a file:<\/p>

              1. Select a CSV file with the passwords you want to import.<\/p><\/li>

              2. Once the import is complete, click \u201cDone.\u201d<\/b> You can also view a detailed import summary.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

                Note that importing from a file may be unsuccessful if the items stored in your CSV document do not have corresponding URLs. Firefox also won\u2019t import duplicate files if it recognizes the same login credentials are already stored in the browser.<\/p>

                How to export Firefox passwords<\/h2>

                Exporting is available on the same page as the import options:<\/p>

                1. Select \u201cExport logins.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

                2. A pop-up screen will inform you that your credentials will be saved as readable text. Click \u201cExport.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

                3. Based on your device, you may have to complete verification, such as entering your password or PIN code.<\/p><\/li>

                4. Select a secure location to store your passwords and click \u201cSave.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

                5. A CSV file will be created.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

                  How to disable the Firefox password manager<\/h2>

                  Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve switched to a password manager, but Firefox keeps prompting you to save your login credentials each time you log in to a new account. Luckily, turning off autosave prompts on Firefox is easy:<\/p>

                  1. In \u201cSettings,\u201d<\/b> find \u201cPrivacy <\/b>&<\/span><\/b> security.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

                  2. Under \u201cLogins and passwords,\u201d<\/b> tick off the \u201cAsk to save logins and passwords for websites\u201d<\/b> box.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

                    If you disable the Firefox password manager but still have some passwords saved, you can select to continue receiving alerts about passwords for breached websites in your browser. If you want to disable the manager and erase all your saved items on Firefox, here\u2019s what you can do:<\/p>

                    1. Go to the \u201cPasswords\u201d<\/b> section as explained above.<\/p><\/li>

                    2. Click the three dots at the top right corner next to your email address and select \u201cRemove all logins.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/li>

                    3. Tick on the \u201cYes, remove these logins<\/b>\u201d box and click \u201cRemove all.\u201d<\/b> Note that this action cannot be undone.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>
