Gartner recently published its latest\u00a0Market Guide for IT Service Management Platforms<\/em>, and as someone who used to co-author the\u00a0Magic Quadrant for ITSM<\/em>\u00a0when I was an analyst at Gartner\u2026 I have some thoughts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Market Guides aren\u2019t about ranking vendors. They are about helping IT buyers understand market trends and make informed decisions. And one of the biggest takeaways from this year\u2019s guide?\u00a0Most organizations are overspending on ITSM tools and failing to get ROI.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>

This isn\u2019t a new problem, but it is getting worse. IT teams are buying advanced features with the\u00a0hope<\/em>\u00a0of using them, but most organizations\u00a0don\u2019t have the maturity to implement them effectively<\/strong>. So, they end up stuck with bloated, expensive tools that don\u2019t deliver the value they expected.\u00a0<\/p>

I want to break down what is happening in the ITSM market and, more importantly, how buyers can avoid this trap.\u00a0<\/p>

The ITSM Market Is Fat, and Most Organizations Are Overspending\u00a0<\/h2>

Gartner\u2019s research confirms what I have seen for years. Eight\u00a0in 10 IT buyers overspend on their ITSM tools.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>

Why? Because they buy based on a\u00a0wish list<\/em>\u00a0of features rather than the\u00a0real<\/strong>\u00a0needs and capabilities of their IT team.\u00a0<\/p>

It is easy to get sold on automation, AI-powered service management, advanced change management, asset discovery, dependency mapping, and all kinds of sophisticated features (by the way, EasyVista offers many of these, we just don\u2019t force you to bundle them if you\u2019re not ready to implement them yet<\/strong>).   1. The \u201cBig Three\u201d (ServiceNow, Ivanti, BMC).<\/strong>\u00a0These platforms are built for the most mature, complex IT environments, the top 10% of organizations. While more than half of IT teams are using one of these tools, the reality is that most will never fully utilize them.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>
    1. More modern but lightweight options (Freshworks, Atlassian).<\/strong>\u00a0These tools are great for simple ticketing and come at a lower price point. But many organizations\u00a0outgrow them quickly<\/strong>, realizing they need more advanced capabilities sooner than expected.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>

      Alright, this is going to sound a little salesy for two seconds, but I promise I\u2019ll move on.\u00a0<\/p>
