Arm chips were used in Macs from 2016 to 2020 and are still commonly used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parallels.com\/windows-11-arm-apple-m-series\/?\">Windows machines<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Still, the M1 chip delivers faster performance and exceptional power efficiency, including a 2X longer battery life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Following the successful release of M1, Apple unveiled the M2 chip in 2022, the M3 chip in 2023, and the M4 chip this past May.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s a safe bet that the M5 chip will be released in 2025. Consequently, enabling it to perform faster and extend MacBook\u2019s battery life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Johny Srouji, Apple\u2019s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, said at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2020\/11\/apple-unleashes-m1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M1 announcemen<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2020\/11\/apple-unleashes-m1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">t<\/a>, \u201cThere has never been a chip like M; our breakthrough SoC (system on a chip) for the Mac.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>It builds on more than a decade of designing industry-leading chips for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, and ushers in a whole new era for the Mac.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M1 chip is available in MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and iMac models.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m1-pro\">M1 Pro<\/h3><p>The M1 Pro offers increased performance with more CPU and GPU cores, making it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2021\/10\/introducing-m1-pro-and-m1-max-the-most-powerful-chips-apple-has-ever-built\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70 percent faster than the M1<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0A PC chip\u2019s peak performance paled compared to M1 Pro\u2019s 1.7x higher CPU performance while using less than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2021\/10\/introducing-m1-pro-and-m1-max-the-most-powerful-chips-apple-has-ever-built\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70 percent power<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parallels.com\/blogs\/steam-games-mac\/\">M1 Pro chip\u2019s integrated graphics<\/a> performed 7x faster than the <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/21\/10\/23\/compared-14-inch-macbook-pro-vs-msi-gp66-leopard-gaming-notebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8-core PC laptop chip<\/a> with its 16-core CPU.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M1 Pro is available on MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, and iPad Pro.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m1-max\">M1 Max<\/h3><p>When it launched in the fall of 2021, the M1 Max was the largest chip Apple had ever built.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>With a 10-core CPU similar to the M1 Pro, it added an impressive 32-core GPU, making its graphics processing capabilities 4x faster than the original M1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>It performed like the highest-end GPU for the largest PC laptops but required far less power.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M1 Max allows for faster performance while it generates less heat and uses quiet fans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M1 Max is available on MacBook Pro and MacBook Studio models.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m1-ultra\">M1 Ultra<\/h3><p>In the M1 series, M1 Ultra is the M chip on steroids.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>It is the UltraFusion packaging of two M1 Max dies, thus creating a powerful system on a chip.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>As a result, it produces 2.5 terabytes of bandwidth\u2014four times higher than its competing PC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Mac M1 Ultra is exclusive to Mac Studio, providing access to apps designed for iPhone and iPad plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parallels.com\/blogs\/force-quit-on-a-mac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">universal apps<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m2-chip\">M2 chip<\/h3><p>Launching the next generation of Apple\u2019s silicon, the M2 is exclusively designed for Macs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Like its M1 predecessor, it maintained its focus on power and efficiency and delivered a CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine.\u00a0<\/p><p>The SoC design of M2 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2022\/06\/apple-unveils-m2-with-breakthrough-performance-and-capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50 percent more bandwidth than M1<\/a>, with up to 24GB of fast unified memory, enabling it to handle larger and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parallels.com\/blogs\/check-mac-storage\/\">more complex workloads<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The M2 chip is available on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iPad Pro, and Mac Studio.\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m2-pro\">M2 Pro<\/h3><p>The M2 Pro is available on the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro.\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m2-max\">M2 Max<\/h3><p>M2 Max is the answer for users who require heavy media tasks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M2 Max was the most powerful chip Apple put in a laptop until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2023\/01\/apple-unveils-m2-pro-and-m2-max-next-generation-chips-for-next-level-workflows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M2 Ultra debuted<\/a>. It has the power to function in GPU-in-depth tasks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parallels.com\/glossary\/virtual-machine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">machine-learning applications<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M2 Max is available on MacBook Pro and Mac Studio.\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m2-ultra\">M2 Ultra<\/h3><p>Inspired by its precursor, the M1 Ultra, the M2 Ultra is created from two M2 Max chips with UltraFusion technology.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>It offers scaled-up workflows, transcodes, exports video, runs intricate particle simulations, and works within 3D environments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>When the M2 Ultra chip was released in June 2023, it made the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro the most powerful Mac desktops ever released up to that point.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M2 Ultra is available on Mac Studio and the Mac Pro. \u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m3-chip\">M3 chip<\/h3><p>The M3 series was released in the fall of 2023, introducing the first three-nanometer technology.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Apple surprised the industry by releasing the three models all at once, rather than their usual practice of releasing them in waves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Laura Metz, director of Apple\u2019s Mac product marketing team, stressed how important it was for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/articles\/apple-silicon-m3-cpus-tested-the-macs-most-advanced-chips-yet-compared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M3 series to democratize features and ensure they are accessible to all users<\/a> while also building their systems for real-life workloads.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The M3 chip series introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/apple-unveils-m3-m3-pro-and-m3-max-the-most-advanced-chips-for-a-personal-computer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple 3nm<\/a> (or 3-nanometer), allowing more transistors to be packed into smaller spaces while elevating speed and efficiency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The devices with M3 chips include the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and the iMac.\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m3-pro\">M3 Pro<\/h3><p>The M3 pro streamlines workflows for creatives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parallels.com\/blogs\/develop-on-vm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coders<\/a>, and researchers. This efficiency was accomplished by making the GPU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/apple-unveils-m3-m3-pro-and-m3-max-the-most-advanced-chips-for-a-personal-computer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40 percent faster than the M1 Pro<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The MacBook Pro comes with the M3 Pro chip.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m3-max\">M3 Max<\/h3><p>The M3 Max is designed for users who require complex applications like 3D graphics and video editing due to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/apple-unveils-m3-m3-pro-and-m3-max-the-most-advanced-chips-for-a-personal-computer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">architectural improvements to the performance and efficiency cores.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-m2-ultra-1\">M2 Ultra<\/h3><p>Despite the success of its predecessors, the M1 and M2 Ultra, and anticipation for the M3 Ultra, Apple scrapped releasing it.
