But what\u2019s the actual status of remote work, and what perspectives does it have?<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">The pandemic became a massive sandbox that proved people don\u2019t necessarily need to be nurtured by the office culture to be productive.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">Workers argue that flexibility is their right whether they prefer to work in the <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"\/en\/global-remote-work-index\/\">best countries for remote work<\/a>, like Germany, Denmark, the US, or any other location of their choice if the job is completed as requested. Management counters with the importance of organizational environment and team bond effectiveness created only by the presence in the office.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">Both sides have their points, so what\u2019s next \u2014 will we return to an on-site-only setup or transition to fully remote? Will more companies compromise on hybrid work after all? Let\u2019s see where the remote work projections are guiding us.<\/p><h2 id=\"how-new-is-the-new-normal-of-remote-work\" class=\"Heading Heading-h2 text-dark-blue\">How new is the \u2018new normal\u2019 of remote work?<\/h2><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">It would be incorrect to say that remote work didn\u2019t exist before 2020. Freelancers were the pioneers of working online \u2014 an adventurous and free-spirited career path. Before the pandemic, <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/cepr.org\/voxeu\/columns\/working-home-estimating-worldwide-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">2,9% of \u2018teleworkers\u2019 globally<\/a> were exclusively working remotely. For instance, in the US market, only <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncci.com\/SecureDocuments\/QEB\/QEB_Q4_2020_RemoteWork.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">6% had never worked<\/a> in any kind of remote work setup.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">The scope of work from home mainly spiked because of a safety measure to prevent virus spread. Even though the alertness settled and life started returning to normal, in 2022, at least occasional <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/owllabs.com\/state-of-remote-work\/2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">remote workers reached 62% globally<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">According to <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/355907\/remote-work-persisting-trending-permanent.aspx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Gallup research<\/a> results, only 2 out of 10 people returned to the old routine \u2014 entirely on-site jobs. Let\u2019s fact-check.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">According to <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1122987\/change-in-remote-work-trends-after-covid-in-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Statista<\/a>, remote work in the US before the 2020s was a relatively rare yet existing event, occurring 1-2 times per week. If we take data from 2018-2021, the fully remote workforce <a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/advice\/remote-work-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">grew four times bigger<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">How has remote work escalated in Europe? The growing tendency of remote work in European countries is also significant.<\/p><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\"><a class=\"hyperlink Link Link--blue-dodger font-medium\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Employment_-_annual_statistics#Employment_in_2021_compared_with_the_EU_target\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Eurostat<\/a> data from 2019-2021 illustrates the increasing number of employed people spending more and more time working from home. The average of EU Member States climbed from<\/p><ul class=\"list\"><li class=\"ml-4 pl-4\"><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">14,6% WFH sometimes or usually* in 2019,\u00a0<\/p><\/li><li class=\"ml-4 pl-4\"><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">20,9% WFH sometimes or usually in 2020 to<\/p><\/li><li class=\"ml-4 pl-4\"><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">24,4% WFH sometimes or usually in 2021.\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"my-4 blog-paragraph text-still-dark-blue\">In 2021, the usually only working individuals made just a little less than sometimes or usually in 2019 \u2014 13% in contrast to 14,6%.
